Daddy (excerpt) "Yeah, but I wanna be the Daddy".
That was my teenage response to the question, 'Do you want to have children?' My answer was always said with friendliness and flamboyant bravado. It was my to-the- point way of covering my alienation from and confusion about the traditional world of gender roles and Motherhood. What I also hid was my bewilderment and resentment when the question was phrased slightly differently, and asked with an overly caring, slightly desperate tone; 'will you still be able to bear children?' My answer was the same regardless of the questioner's tone, and still hasn't changed. |
